Sega’s tech was usually leagues ahead of Nintendo and sometimes even Sony, but asking fans to get the latest hardware every few years or be left in the dust was not a winning strategy. Customers took their money elsewhere, and I’m sure the folks at Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft took note of Sega’s mistakes.

It was a different world back then, when everything was physical media. Once a console was finished, all games and peripherals ceased to be stocked in stores and would quickly dwindle away. Today, gamers can use their old PS4 controllers with their PS5 and Xbox One controllers with their Xbox Series X|S – that concept was completely unheard of 10-plus years ago.

In 2022, Nintendo is taking heat for gradually dropping support for their online storefronts for the 3DS and Wii U, which haven’t been relevant for about five years.
We now know that similar measures are on the horizon for the PlayStation 4 in 2025 – and again, that seems completely reasonable considering the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020.

Oddly enough, Microsoft seems to be the winner in terms of long-term console support. Perhaps they simply have more server space than they know what to do with because gamers can still purchase and download the vast majority of Xbox 360 games and add-ons online – keep in mind that system is now 17 years old and obsolete by two generations.

But I’m sure at some point, they’ll ultimately pull the plug, too.
So, while there are many ways that video gaming is going downhill – corporate buyouts, microtransactions, content paywalls, longer development times and heaps of disappointing “AAA” games among them – the longevity of consoles and official support for them is better than it’s ever been by a long shot.

Open your 4K compatible device display settings menu.
Find the resolution settings and enable 4K.
Repeat these steps for any devices between your PS4 Pro console and 4K compatible display device.

Your PS4 Pro console should automatically enable 4K if it detects a 4K compatible device connected to it. To make sure 4K and the highest possible resolution are enabled:

From the home screen go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings,
Set the Resolution to 2160P – YUV420 or 2160p- RGB,
If you set the resolution to Automatic your PS4 Pro system will default to the highest possible resolution available for the display device it is connected to and content being played/streamed.
Start a 4K compatible game* or video streaming service.

*Some games will require you to enable 4K within the in-game menu. Check the game manual to find out more. Note: Some options may be greyed out (not available) if your 4K display device does not support these resolutions.4K is almost four times higher definition than standard (1080p HD).

Though all PS4 consoles have HDR capabilities, you can enjoy 4K only with the PS4 Pro console.
The availability of enhanced image quality depends on your home entertainment set-up.
The PS4 Pro consoles automatically select the best available resolution.
The definition displayed on your TV may be limited when you have a PlayStation®VR Processor Unit and headset connected to your PS4 Pro console.

This may be caused by compatibility limitations of some 4K TV models. If, after connecting your PS4 Pro console to your 4K-compatible display device, you aren’t seeing an image, please follow these steps:

Access Safe Mode on your PS4 Pro console.
Select option 8: Set HDCP Mode
Select HDCP 1.4 Only
Your system will automatically restart when you select OK,

You should now be able to see an image on your TV. However, you may not get 4K or HDR for some content or apps while HDCP 1.4 is enabled.

Power off your PS4 Pro console again by holding down the power button until you hear a 2nd beep. Once it’s powered down, access Safe Mode again as before.
Now select option 2: Change Resolution, You’ll be prompted to restart the system and select a resolution.
Once the system has restarted, select 2160p – YUV420 as the resolution. You should now be able to see an image on your TV.
Now turn off your console, and restart it in Safe Mode one last time.
Select option 8: Set HDCP Mode and choose option 1: Automatic,

Check that you’re using the correct HDMI input. Most 4K display devices have dedicated HDMI ports for 4K resolution. Check your device manual to identify which port you should be using.
Make sure any HDMI cables between your PS4 Pro console and TV are Premium certified (v1.4+). The HDMI cable supplied with your PS4 Pro console is suitable.
Check your TV settings and make sure that UHD Color is set to “on”. (not applicable for all TV models)
Make sure that the content you’re playing supports 4K or HDR. Some games required 4K or HDR to be enabled within the in-game menu.
