However, the fact that many viewers did, indeed, believe that such a move was possible points to the disposability of animal characters, especially when their death is justified on the basis of preserving the human. While this happy ending could be seen as evidence for the affection with which animals—and animal representations—circulate, the whole storyline still demonstrates the narrative insecurity of animals compared to humans.18 This primacy of the human becomes even more evident in view of the episodes between Brian’s death and his eventual resurrection.
Toward the end of “Life of Brian,” the Griffins decide to get a new dog in order to fill the void Brian’s death has left behind in the family. At a pet shop Peter chooses Vinny, a smooth-talking dog with an Italian accent, and takes him home. At first, Stewie, Brian’s closest friend, is highly resistant to the idea of replacing Brian and plans to have Vinny removed.

In this way, Vinny’s dog-ness becomes more significant than his role as an Italian stereotype, and one dog is offered up to function narratively in an identical manner to the one that died only ten minutes earlier.
I highlighted the importance of the serial, episodic nature of television to understanding how the medium functions above. In this context, this particular ending of “Life of Brian” signals that future episodes of Family Guy can employ the same basic narrative premise as the show used prior to Brian’s death, thereby indicating the extent to which both Brian and Vinny’s dog-ness are, effectively, one and the same.
Their function as pets within the program’s diegesis is thus in accord with their function as pets within the program’s organizing structure. This aspect becomes manifest when Brian returns from the dead. The narrative depicts Brian being saved, being pushed out of the way of the car that, in the original timeline, killed him. In this new alternative timeline, the Griffin family never encountered the other dog, Vinny, who consequently simply disappears from the program.
The resurrection of Brian Griffin is dependent upon the death of Vinny—a death so certain that he never diegetically existed in the first place. While dogs may be permissible within Family Guy ‘s narrative, it seems the show can incorporate only one at a time.

HOW DOGS ARE USED – Dogs are often used in biomedical research investigating heart and lung disease, cancer, and orthopedics. They are also used in toxicity studies to test the safety of drugs and industrial chemicals, but are rarely used to assess the safety of personal care and household products.

The news, which broke last week, piqued the interest of dog lovers across the country, some of whom volunteered to adopt one or more of the rescued animals.
- It also prompted questions about how often dogs are used in animal testing, and what institutional failures led to 4,000 beagles living in such poor conditions.

But even when these regulations are followed, there remains a moral dilemma over whether animals should be used in this way, and whether dogs should be treated differently. Dogs are “a controversial but widely used animal for animal experimentation,” Basl says. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 58,511 dogs were used in USDA-registered research in 2019, and 16,013 of those dogs likely experienced pain as part of the research.
Among the dogs that are used for animal testing, beagles are preferred because they are small and docile, In addition, Basl says, if previous research has been done on beagles, a new, similar study will likely use them as well. “One reason to choose a particular species is because we have a history of data on that species and so we can ensure new data is commensurate with old data,” he says.
Still, the number of beagles used in animal research pales in comparison to the number of rodents in labs. Mice and rats are by far the most commonly used lab animal— one disputed study found that over 100 million mice and rats are being used in clinical testing, and that they comprise over 99% of lab animals—but according to Basl, all clinical trials must be done on more than one animal, and one of the animals cannot be a rodent.
Bunnies are not rodents, so they are used for this purpose, as are dogs, cats and non-human primates. For these animals to come from a breeding facility like the one in Virginia is not a surprise, Basl says. Sometimes, institutions that perform animal testing will breed their own animals. “But oftentimes, that work is outsourced,” he says.
5 Times Brian Has Proved That Dogs Are Mans Best Friend
Laws regulating treatment of these animals have been in place for over half a century. In 1965, U.S. Rep. Joseph Resnick introduced the Laboratory Animal Welfare bill, a precursor to the Animal Welfare Act (Resnick’s bill was in response to reports that family dogs were being stolen and used for animal testing).
In 1966, the Animal Welfare Act passed, becoming “the only Federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals in research, teaching, testing, exhibition, transport, and by dealers,” according to the USDA, one of the agencies charged with enforcing the law. In 1985, an amendment to the AWA added another layer of protection for lab animals.
According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, any institution—including universities like Northeastern—that experiments on animals must establish an institutional animal care and use committee, which must include a veterinarian and someone outside the institution, to regulate animal testing.
According to Basl, for a researcher to use an animal for testing, they must justify the need to use animals to the IACUC, and to adhere to guidelines. This precludes researchers from harming animals unless it is required to achieve research ends, he says, and also requires them to house social animals together unless the experiment specifically requires them to be isolated.
However, “there are IACUCs that are not doing their job,” Basl says. In the Virginia case, conditions at Envigo prompted lawmakers to introduce five “beagle bills” addressing animal welfare and to put pressure on the USDA to investigate AWA violations at the facility.
The facility will close and all of the dogs are being removed. Even if the laws had been followed, should the dogs have been there in the first place? This is one of the moral quandaries Basl contends within his research. For Basl, a huge factor when considering the relative morality of animal testing is their mental capacity, which determines “the extent to which you can harm a being,” he says.
Rabbits, for example, typically have a more narrow range of mental capacity than humans; they cannot reflect on past traumas, and do not have the capacity to think far into the past or into the future. “That can be the source of both great enjoyment but also significant suffering,” he says.
Moreover, “different species vary with respect to that capacity, and we don’t always know how much, and often as humans we underestimate the capacities of animals.” Mental capacity is the main reason for how rare chimpanzees are in animal testing, Basl says. “Because of the capacities that chimps have, because they’re so much like us, it’s much harder to justify their use, so they’re used less frequently,” he says.
Cultural factors may also influence what is considered acceptable when it comes to testing. The value placed on dogs in the United States, for example, makes it less palatable to test on them as opposed to rodents. At the same time, our relationship with dogs may actually mean they suffer more than other lab animals.
- Domestication has changed the profile of their capacities,” Basl says.
- Dogs are especially sociable and capable of having relationships with humans that differ from many other animals, he says, and this can make them susceptible to different forms of suffering.
- Despite the relative nature of suffering between species, Basl says, “Most mammals suffer from the kinds of things done to them that would harm us,” and he tends to think of mammals as roughly equally capable of suffering.
This suffering can be harder to justify knowing that the success rate of clinical trials on animals is quite low: Basl says only a small fraction of clinical trials using animals yield drugs that are of benefit to humans. “Most animal studies do not yield direct benefits,” Basl says.

Peter Löwenbräu Griffin Sr. (born Justin Peter McFinnigan ) is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the American animated sitcom Family Guy, He is voiced by the series’ creator, Seth MacFarlane, and first appeared on television, along with the rest of the Griffin family, in the 15-minute pilot pitch of Family Guy on December 20, 1998.
- Peter was created and designed by MacFarlane himself.

One of Family Guy’s biggest lingering plot holes is Brian’s son Dylan, who seems to be entirely human despite his father being a dog in the show. 
Family Guy has opened a Pandora’s box of confusing animal and human relationships, but Brian fathering a human son is an ever-present plot hole. In season 6, the series introduced Dylan, Brian’s long-lost teenage offspring. Dylan is not only a human character but weirdly older than his dad.
- In Family Guy season 6, episode 11, “The Former Life of Brian,” Brian discovers he’s fathered a son with his ex-girlfriend Tracy Flannigan (voiced by Rachael MacFarlane), who, after introducing Dylan (Seth Green) to Brian (Seth MacFarlane), sends the kid to the Griffin’s front door.
- Brian initially rebukes his son but later in the episode becomes overly protective of him.
Defying nature as a hard-drinking, hindleg walking egotist, Brian is one of few dogs who can speak in Family Guy as well as attempt to write novels and screenplays. Brian’s personality traits define his relationship with his son. When Dylan returns in season 12, episode 11, “Brian’s a Bad Father,” Brian reveals he’s willing to exploit his flesh and blood when he extorts a screenwriting gig from Dylan’s new Disney show, Parent Boppers,
- Convincing human behaviors make it easy for audiences to look past Brian’s animalistic inclinations.
- After twenty years on-air, Brian’s pseudo-human status has rarely been questioned.
- Yet, for all of Family Guy’s persuasive storytelling, the confusion surrounding Brian’s fathering a full-on human being remains one of the series’ biggest question marks.
Clearly, Family Guy is no stranger to testing nature’s boundaries. 
When Vinny the replacement dog was introduced as Brian’s short-lived successor in season 12, episode 6, “The Life of Brian,” he tells Peter (Seth MacFarlane) that he’s ” one-sixteenth cat,” Vinny, voiced by The Sopranos ‘ Tony Sirico, is just one example of the series’ regular crossbreeding gags.
In fact, Family Guy has a habit of injecting hybrid animals into its cutaways. From season 4’s notable Noah’s Ark cutaway featuring a crossbred elephant and penguin to a human-esque female frog dancing to Bon Jovi in season 13’s “Stewie Is Enceinte,” Family Guy routinely mates species for humor. The problem is there’s not much rhyme or reason to the experimentation, which still leaves Dylan’s purely human roots unanswered.
A memorable plotline that does more to muddle Dylan’s origins comes from another one of Family Guy’s darkest episodes, season 13’s “This Little Piggy.” Stewie (Seth MacFarlane) gives birth to a litter of crossbred puppies fathered by Brian. In this instance, the offspring are half-human and half-dog.
The sickly state of the brood results in their early demise, and by the episode’s end, Brian is grimly back to a single heir. Why Brian’s chromosomes would result in partially human children with Stewie when he produced an entirely human offspring years before is never addressed. Dylan wasn’t Brian’s only child, but he was Brian’s only human child.
Finally, the age difference between Brian and Dylan isn’t a reality that seems to faze Family Guy writers. Brian is approximately eight years old during season 6 and Brian having a 13-year-old son is physically impossible unless Family Guy later reveals some Brian and Stewie time travel trickery to help smooth out the plot hole.

Stewie’s mastery of physics and mechanical engineering is quite extraordinary and at a level of science fiction. He has constructed advanced fighter-jets, mind control devices, a weather control device, a teleportation device, robots, clones, a working Transporter device from Star Trek, time machines, a Multiverse Transporter, a shrinking pod, as well as an assortment of weapons including lasers, rocket launchers, and crossbows.
Stewie employs these to cope with the perceived stresses of infant life (such as teething pain, and eating broccoli) and to murder his mother, Lois, with mixed success at best depending on the objective. As made clear in the pilot episode, Stewie’s matricidal tendencies are a result of Lois constantly and unwittingly thwarting his schemes, and so he desires to kill her to carry out his plans without her interference.
In other, later episodes, Stewie engages in other violent and criminal acts, including robbery, aggravated assault, carjacking, loan sharking, forgery, and killing off many minor characters (with a tank, guns, and other assorted weaponry). Stewie eventually realizes his dreams of matricide and world domination in the sixth season two-part episode ” Stewie Kills Lois ” and ” Lois Kills Stewie “.
The events are reverted in a deus ex machina ending, where most of the story turns out to be a computer simulation, Because of the rather disastrous ending for himself in the simulation, being shot and killed by Peter, he decides to put aside his outlandish plans of matricide and world domination for the time being.
- Stewie shows a complete disdain for most people especially Matthew McConaughey but does show affection and even rare instances of kindness to his family.
- Such moments include his support for Meg (whom he traditionally calls “Megan”) as when he chided Brian’s coke -induced hostility to her (” The Thin White Line “), retracted his joke, “I hate you too, bitch” when Meg said “I hate you all” to the family (” Untitled Griffin Family History “), and wiped her tears during a weepy moment.
On a more frequent basis though, Stewie constantly disrespects Meg, as he does with most elders (and as most people do to Meg), often being rude to her and subjecting her to the malice of his misbehavior, once even tricking her outside to be attacked by bees on steroids.
He generally thinks of Peter as an inferior—regarding him simply as “the fat man” and, at one point, harboring doubts that Peter could be his father (” Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story “)—but does bond with him over a shared love of practical jokes made at Lois’ expense (” The Courtship of Stewie’s Father “).
While Stewie typically regards Chris as a stooge, he considers him his only friend aside from Brian, and even helped Chris to dress when he felt too shy to date (” Extra Large Medium “) and assists him in dealing with bullies (” Secondhand Spoke “). In a few episodes, such as ” Stewie Loves Lois “, it is shown that Stewie can love his mother.
- In that episode, after Lois recovers and repairs a lost Rupert and serves Stewie a meal he likes, he rethinks Lois and accepts her as a loving mother.
- When he becomes too dependent on her, she deliberately takes no notice of him; when he hurts himself, she tries to show notice of him again, and he returns to hating her.
However, at the end of the season nine premiere, ” And Then There Were Fewer “, when Diane Simmons is about to murder Lois for uncovering her murderous revenge scheme, Stewie secretly saves Lois by killing Diane with a sniper rifle, though he states to himself that he only did it to not miss out on the opportunity to kill Lois in the future.
In the more recent seasons, Stewie has a larger amount of freedom from his parents, usually spending much of his time with Brian, This extends to the point of his ability to keep pigs from parallel universes (” Road to the Multiverse “) or take part in the television series Jolly Farm (” Go Stewie Go “), as compared to the first season, in which his plans were constantly hindered by Lois,
In ” The Hand That Rocks the Wheelchair “, Stewie inadvertently clones an evil twin of himself after trying to increase his evil nature. By the end of the episode, it is suggested that the original Stewie may have been unknowingly killed by Brian (as he cannot tell them apart) and Stewie turns to the camera with glowing yellow eyes (reminiscent of Michael Jackson ‘s ” Thriller “).
But so far, the Stewie has recently seen in ” Trading Places “, the follow-up episode, he still seems to have his mostly harmless eccentricity, shown when he asks Brian if he wants to trade places with him for fun. He also starts to interact with more people despite still having hatred towards many of them, as shown in cutaways in later episodes, and is more flamboyant.
Stewie is shown in more recent episodes to be a superfan of Taylor Swift and even sets her up with Chris as a prom date. Stewie has had a few rare interactions with his pedophile elderly neighbor Herbert, Stewie intensely dislikes him and is one of the few characters fully aware of Herbert’s nature, even calling him a pervert to his face.
