ONE becomes joint-owner of Seaspan Corp in $11bn takeover By 29/03/2023 Japanese carrier Ocean Network Express (ONE) has become joint-owner of the world’s largest non-operating containership owner, Seaspan Corp, in a $10.9bn deal. In an announcement of the completion of the acquisition of Seaspan parent Atlas Corp, by Poseidon Acquisition Corp, ONE and partners, ONE said it now owned 28.7% of the now private company.
Trading of the common shares on the New York Stock Exchange will be suspended with immediate effect. But Atlas preferred shares will remain outstanding and continue to trade. According to Alphaliner, Seaspan has a fleet of 137 vessels, with a capacity of 1.25m teu, which it leases to liner operators on long-term charters.
Were it not a non-operating owner (NOO), it would rank eighth in the carrier league table, behind new joint-owner ONE’s 1.5m teu.
Moreover, the consultant said, Seaspan had a “massive” 57 ships on order that would provide a further 690,000 teu.Alphaliner noted: “Seaspan is typically not very active in the day-to-day charter market, but rather acts as a strategic tonnage provider that charters containerships to blue-chip carriers under long-term contracts.”It added that most of the NOO’s vessels were ordered or acquired in conjunction with carriers, supported by signed charter party commitments.ONE has 24 ships, with a capacity of 238,000 teu, on charter from Seaspan and, according to Alphaliner, “at least another 15 ships for 152,000 teu” fixed from the NOO’s newbuild pipeline.
But the largest portion of Seaspan’s orderbook is committed to Israeli carrier Zim, which has agreed charters for 15 7,800 teu ships and 10 15,000 teu vessels, all of which will be LNG-dual fuelled. Zim has taken these on 12-year time-charters, and they will be deployed on its Asia-US east coast service.
In addition to ONE and Zim, Seaspan’s ocean carrier portfolio includes MSC, Cosco, Yang Ming, CMA CGM, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The average age of its current fleet is 5.2 years and the average remaining lease period is 7.7 years for a charter hire backlog of $18.2bn through to 2042 from its current fleet and newbuild fixtures.

Who founded Seaspan?
In 1964, Dennis Washington started the Washington Construction Company with a loan and a leased bulldozer. The company was contracted to repair roads for the U.S. Forest Service. After winning major highway contracts in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Washington Construction next applied its earth moving capability to mine construction and operation and continued to grow with federal, state, and local highway construction projects.
A period of company divestments and acquisitions followed until 1992, when Mr. Washington diversified into marine transportation with the purchase of Canadian tugboat company, C.H. Cates and Sons. The next acquisition occurred in 1994 with purchase of Seaspan International Ltd., one of the largest tug and barge companies in Canada, which included shipyards operations.
In 1998, a commercial ferry service to Vancouver Island was acquired, operating today as Seaspan Ferries Corporation. The Canadian Merchant Service Guild (CMSG) represents the licensed maritime crew aboard Seaspan’s tugs, and its last collective bargaining agreement with the company expired in late 2019. The union was not satisfied with the company’s last, best offer in contract negotiations this summer – particularly the size of a cost of living adjustment and a plan for “pager” shift scheduling, according to documents obtained by local paper The Tyee.
On August 25, union leadership announced a strike action, including a picket line at Seaspan’s other line of business – shipbuilding for the Canadian government. Seaspan’s shipbuilding enterprise is focused on federal government contracts, and it has been running behind schedule. It holds a contract to build two $1.5 billion (CAD$2 billion per unit) underway-replenishment fleet auxiliaries for the Royal Canadian Navy; construction on the first began in June 2018, and after a series of setbacks, it is now expected to deliver in 2025.
The picket line had an immediate and substantial impact. “Virtually no union employees have reported to work at Vancouver Shipyards” since the picket line went up, a Seaspan spokesperson told North Shore News. That disruption is now over. In a brief note to members published Friday, the CMSG said that it has reached a tentative deal with Seaspan.

operator Seaspan. The agreement allows the towing vessel officers to return to work, but it will also allow Seaspan’s much larger shipbuilding enterprise to resume operations. Production at its Vancouver Shipyard plant has been heavily affected since September 7, when striking tug officers set up a picket line at the yard – and 1,000 unionized welders, pipefitters, electricians and other essential shipbuilding personnel decided not to cross it.
The Canadian Merchant Service Guild (CMSG) represents the licensed maritime crew aboard Seaspan’s tugs, and its last collective bargaining agreement with the company expired in late 2019. The union was not satisfied with the company’s last, best offer in contract negotiations this summer – particularly the size of a cost of living adjustment and a plan for “pager” shift scheduling, according to documents obtained by local paper The Tyee.
The picket line had an immediate and substantial impact. “Virtually no union employees have reported to work at Vancouver Shipyards” since the picket line went up, a Seaspan spokesperson told North Shore News. That disruption is now over. In a brief note to members published Friday, the CMSG said that it has reached a tentative deal with Seaspan.

Seaspan Shipyards surpasses $2 Billion in contracts to Canadian companies under National Shipbuilding Strategy March 27, 2023 – North Vancouver, BC – As the shipbuilding industry in Canada continues its resurgence, Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) has awarded more than $2 billion in contracts to Canadian companies for the design and construction of new, large non-combat vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard.
This includes the supply-chain engaged for the three ships already delivered, the three currently under construction in the shipyard and the two-classes of vessels currently in the design phase. These vessels are being built as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), a multi-decade program to renew Canada’s federal fleet of ships and create economic impact and employment opportunities across the country.
Seaspan’s cross-Canada NSS supply chain continues to grow, and now includes more than 700 Canadian businesses, with greater than half being small and medium-sized enterprises – defined as having fewer than 250 employees. The long-term contracts provided to these businesses by Seaspan under the NSS provide a source of stable revenue that encourages suppliers to reinvest in R&D, technology and process improvements, skills development, and new infrastructure.
Construction and delivery of the third OFSV was completed by working continuously, and safely, through the COVID-19 pandemic. Construction is also currently underway on the Canadian Coast Guard’s Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel, and two Joint Support Ships for the Royal Canadian Navy, the longest naval vessels to ever be built in Canada.
As Seaspan moves forward with the design of Canada’s Polar Icebreaker and the Multi-Purpose Vessels, contracts will continue to be awarded to its Canadian supply chain partners as additional services and materials are required.
