Subsequently coats of arms appeared on the flag for specific official purposes. The present national flag was established when the government reverted to the horizontal yellow-blue-red on December 10, 1861. In doing so, however, it made the yellow stripe twice the width of either of the other stripes.
Provision was made for distinctive symbols in the centre of the flag for such purposes as identification of the diplomatic service, navy ships, privately owned vessels, and the armed forces. Essentially the same symbols had already been in use for half a century, but the exact artistic rendition had varied from one regime to the next in reaction to the changing political landscape.

The national flag of the Republic of Moldova ( Romanian : Drapelul Moldovei ) is a vertical triband of blue, yellow, and red, charged with the coat of arms of Moldova (an eagle holding a shield charged with an aurochs ) on the centre bar. The reverse is mirrored.
The flag ratio is 1:2. Until further provisions, the State Flag of Moldova is used as the national flag and ensign as well; that is, civil, state and war flag and ensign. The blue-yellow-red tricolour of Moldova is inspired by the flag of Romania, reflecting the two countries’ national and cultural affinity.

In the case of Chile’s flag colors, the white traditionally represents the snow of the Andes Mountains, the blue symbolizes the sky, while the red recalls the blood shed by early Chileans fighting for the country’s independence from Spain. A number of possible influences could have inspired the inclusion of the lone star.
Some say that it points out the fact that Chile is a unitary state. Others say it symbolizes a guide to progress and honor. Most interestingly, early descriptions of a flag used by the indigenous Mapuche troops during the Arauco War depict an all blue flag with a white star in the middle; nearly identical to the blue part of today’s Chilean flag.
The Arauco War, an armed conflict between the Spanish and the Mapuche, lasted for centuries, beginning with the early Spanish conquest in the 1500s and ending years after Chilean independence. Tens of thousands died on each side as they struggled for power over land in Chile.
Chilean law dictates strict rules concerning the display and use of the national flag. Homes and buildings must fly the flag on several different national holidays. Failure to do so could result in a fine. As late as October 2011, the law forbade the exhibition of the flag in public, without official approval, on days besides the holidays requiring its display.
The law also defines public mistreatment of the flag as a felony. Every year, on July 10th, the pledge to the flag of Chile is recited on military bases across the country to commemorate the 77 soldiers that lost their lives in the 1882 Pacific War battle of La Conception.

The modern flag of Russia is a tricolor flag consisting of three horizontal fields: the top is white, the middle is blue, and the bottom is red. Initially, the flag was used only for Russian merchant ships but in 1696 it became the official flag of the Tsardom of Russia until the year 1922.1922 was the year when all Russian territory was successfully captured by the Bolsheviks during the Russian civil war.

Vlasov chose the wrong side of history and after trying to switch sides again when he was captured during the apocalyptic Nazi retreat to Berlin, Vlasov was instead sent to Moscow and interrogated before being one of the last people to be hanged in the Soviet Union, after which the Soviet death penalty was conducted only by shooting.
- In 1991, as the Soviet empire descended into anarchy and a coup was attempted in Moscow, the supreme soviet of Russia ordered that the old imperial tricolor be reinstated as the national flag of the state.
- On Christmas day 1991, the iconic Soviet flag was lowered for the final time over the Kremlin in Moscow and so began the dissolution of the USSR.

During the era of the Spanish Empire, the Cruz de Borgoña (Cross of Burgundy) was used from 1534 until 1820 as a general flag for the Spanish colonial empire.
